General information
Official name: Romania (formerly also spelled Rumania or Roumania).

National Flag: Romania’s flag is tricolour, with the colours positioned vertically, starting from the spear in the following order: blue, yellow, and red.

Government: Republic with two Houses of Parliament. The President, Senators and Deputies are elected through universal, equal, direct, secret and freely expressed vote.

Area: 237 500 km² (78th).

Location: southeast of Europe, the territory is crossed almost in the middle by the Parallel of 46 degrees latitude North, and the Meridian of 25 degrees longitude East.

Boundaries: Bulgaria (south) 608 km, Hungary (west) 443 km, Moldova (east) 450 km, Serbia and Montenegro (south-west) 476 km, Ukraine (north) 362 km, Ukraine (east) 169 km, Black Sea (east) 225 km.

Capital: Bucharest (Bucuresti), 44°25' N 26°06' E.

Administrative division: Romania is divided into 41 counties, and the municipality of Bucharest (Bucuresti) - the capital.

Population: 21,698,181 inhabitants (2002). Romanians: 19,409,400 (89.5%); Magyars: 1,434,377 (6.6%); Rroms: 535,250 (2.5%); Germans: 60,088 (0.3%); Ukrainians: 61,353 (0.3%); Russians: 36.397 (0.2%); Turks: 32,596 (0.2%); Tartars: 24,137 (0.1%); Serbians: 22,518 (0.1%); Slovaks: 17,199 (0.1%); Bulgarians: 8,092 (< 0,05%); Croatians: 6,786 (< 0,05%); Greeks: 6,513 (< 0,05%); Jews: 5,870 (< 0,05%); Czechs: 3,938 (< 0,05%); Poles: 3,671 (< 0,05%); Italians: 3,331 (< 0,05%); Armenians: 1,780 (< 0,05%).

Religion: Romanian Orthodox - 86.8%, Roman Catholic - 4.5%, Protestant - 3.7%, Pentecostal - 1.5%, Greek-Catholic Uniate - 0.9%.

Languages: Romanian (official), Hungarian, German.
